38th National Festival of The Immigrant Obera, Misiones, Argentina.

IMG_2391

This annual Festival celebrates the diverse cultures that exist in Obera today, reflecting the rich traditions of song, dance, customs and cuisine of Argentina's immigrant population.

Celebration

For ten days during the first two weeks in September, the small town of Obera comes alive with a great party spirit. This is the opportunity for the present inhabitants, whose parents and grandparents were pioneers from Europe and South America who settled and established the town, to exhibit their cultural heritage. Here they celebrate their nationalities through song, music and dance. As well as providing spectacular shows each night, a highlight of the overall event is the crowning of the Festival Queen, where contestants representing each or the communities take part.

Multi-cultural

Events begin with a Grand Parade through the town centre featuring participants dressed in their traditional costumes, from the local communities of: Arab, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nordic, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine. This is a precursor to the party festival at the parade's destination in the ten hectare Nation's park. It's on the main stage there the action takes place with singers, dancers and musicians performing to the audience's delight, evidenced by the enthusiastic applause.

Hospitality                                                                                                                                                                                Crowds meander along the pathways of the enclosed park area containing individual houses constructed in architectural designs of the various countries. All houses benefit from restaurants producing traditional foods and of course refreshments. This of course presents an excellent opportunity to sample the hospitality, food and drink from a diverse range of cultures such as Arabic, Japanese, Spanish and Ukrainian to mention just a few. Many of the houses also have annexes offering assorted takeaway snacks.

Atmosphere                                                                                                                                                                              Given the many cultures represented at the event, you are sure of a lively atmosphere.  The Festival spirit takes over and infects all ages without exception and is always an exciting event and definitely shouldn't be missed by those interested in Argentinian culture. Next year's Festival dates are 06th September to 16th September 2018.
