A Popular Summer Beach On The Maryland/Virginia Eastern Shore

Assateague-_20200723-085740_1
Assateague Island National Seashore is one of the most popular, scenic places not only in the region, but in the entire nation as well.

A Brief Overview of What Assateague Offers

Assateague, which covers land area both in Maryland and Virginia, is known for its vast beaches, wild horses, and hundreds of species of birds.

The idea might especially appeal to you if you live in the Delmarva region or plan on taking a vacation to the Eastern Shore from elsewhere in the country.

The Virginia side of the island includes the Assateague Lighthouse and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge. The annual Pony Swim takes place in Chincoteague, an area that also provides an excellent opportunity for bird watchers.

A Scenic Drive

As you drive past the Assateague Island Visitor Center and cross over the Verrazano Bridge, you can pick out some of the tall buildings of Ocean City, Maryland in the distance.

Heading south along this 37-mile strip of land surrounded by scenic marshlands, you might see a wild turkey sprinting across the field. It is not uncommon to come across two wild horses galloping along the road or spot some feeding themselves in the open grassy areas.

After driving on this scenic route, you can stop at either bayside or oceanside. The bayside includes some shaded areas.
