Autumn colour in Michigan

The State of Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline in the United States along with more than 100 public beaches, some of the highest freshwater sand dunes in the world.

There are multi-colored sandstone cliffs, two National Lakeshores and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron.

Autumn is one of the most attractive times of year to visit Michigan with 19 million acres of forests forming colourful canopies of crimsons, oranges and golds.



There's the chance to take a fall colour tour along the scenic byways, highways and coastlines and participate in some of the iconic traditions and events that celebrate this vibrant season.

The panoramic lake scenery can also provides a back drop to many outdoor adventures at this time of year or take some of the 1,300 miles of hiking and biking trails.

The Fall Scenic Drive

The Lake Michigan shore, along M-22, provides perhaps Michigan's most famous scenic drive, with glimpses of the sparkling lake peeking through the brilliant foliage all along the Leelanau Peninsula shoreline.

A drive up Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor offers spectacular views.

Hike Michigan's Wild Places

Michigan's hiking trails in the fall offers trees ablaze with colour.

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park has brilliant foliage against a backdrop of Lake Superior and the Lake of the Clouds.
