The most anticipated ascent of the iconic West Highland Way
Despite its ominous name, the Devil's Staircase in Glencoe is a relatively short and very pleasant hike. The path has been much improved over the years and the views are amazing.
The ascent from the A82 as it passes through Glencoe rises to just over 1,800ft at its highest point. From the top, you can see the Blackwater Reservoir and across to the Mamore Mountains towering above the town of Kinlochleven.
It is thought the Devil's Staircase got its name from General Wade's soldiers who had to carry heavy loads up and down it. Legend has it also that workers have been 'claimed by the Devil' and never seen again after attempting the ascent following a night's drinking in Glencoe.
