The Canal & River Trust
Drifters also works with the Canal & River Trust in highlighting the enjoyment of canal boat holidays.
The Canal & River Trust has guardianship of canals, rivers, reservoirs and docks in England and Wales.
It maintains 2000 miles of waterway network with the 2,949 bridges, 1,582 locks and 280 aqueducts along the way.
In Scotland this role is performed by Scottish Canals.
This enables everyone to make the most of this tremendous natural resource and the wildlife habitats it embraces.
The Trust works to make sure canals, rivers, reservoirs and docks are safe and navigable and undertakes the repair and restoration of historic locks, bridges and aqueducts along its waterways.
The Trust also protects the wildlife habitats around waterways and encourages sustainable practices to preserve water quality and support biodiversity.
All this helps the Trust to promote a full range of leisure activities that embrace boating, fishing cycling, and walking.
The face-to-face contact between the Trust and those who live, trade or enjoy leisure time on the water comes through its 'out and about' teams and through the many dedicated volunteers who provide information, advice and support along with waterway maintenance and cleanups.
They are excellent ambassadors for the Trust and 'worth their weight in gold' for narrowboat novices, like Ann and myself.
Finally, the Trust also works with local communities in fostering ownership and pride in the waterways that form an integral part of their lives.
