The Chocó Andino de Pichincha is now recognised by UNESCO within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The Chocó Andino extends through 700+ acres of land that provide high amounts of pure air thanks to the vast life of flora and fauna, with 83% of its area within the Metropolitan District of Quito.
The cloudy forests of Chocó Andino preserve a large number of emblematic flora and fauna species and hosts 270 types of mammals.
A total of 30% of all birds and 15% of the country's plant species are found here.Animals here include the spectacled bear, the Chocó toucan, the rock rooster, "tigrillos", "olingos" and the black-eared shag.
The Chocó Andino de Pichincha is one of the seven Biosphere reserves in Ecuador.
