England’s Coast

The England's Coast project, which is delivered by the National Coastal Tourism Academy offers a browse-and-book tool for coastal trips with walking routes, heritage sites, places to stay and family attractions.

There is the chance to book directly with hundreds of restaurants, cafés, pubs, hotels, B&Bs and campsites.

Among the many coastal areas of interest :

The North West Coast

Cumbria's Hidden Coast

A new 40-mile trail through Cumbria's Hidden Coast, will link Millom to Whitehaven (part of the England Coast Path) via the Duddon Estuary, Silecroft, and Ravenglass.

Blackpool

In Blackpool, the Art B&B art hotel and venue, designed by 30 contemporary artists has sea views, and a seafront ART cocktail bar.

Morecambe

The Midland Hotel is a restored 4* Art Deco hotel that was once the haunt of Coco Chanel and Noel Coward.

Wallsend Guest House & Glamping Pods

These are located in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Lake District National Park

The coastal Lake District doesn't get as much attention as its better-known inland areas, but is one of the most scenic coastal areas in Britain.

Ravenglass

Ravenglass is the national park's only coastal village, and the Pennington Hotel makes for a base for the Eskdale narrow gauge railway, Muncaster Castle and St Bees beach.

The North East Coast

The Lumiere Light Festival

18 to 21 November 2021

The Lumiere Light Festival returns to Durham, with local and international artists creating illuminations that transform the city's urban spaces and familiar public buildings.

The 5-star Seaham Hall is located on the Durham Heritage Coast

Castle Eden Dene

Castle Eden Dene is one of the most important areas of woodland in the North of England and an example of the 'wildwood' that once covered most of Britain.

This ancient deep gorge is home to a variety of birds and more than 450 species of plants, and mammals such as roe deer and fox.

The North East seafood trail

At the north of the county lies Ross, part of the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, is where the Sutherland family farm their 'Lindisfarne' Pacific Oysters.

The Craster kipper is smoked in Northumberland at L Robson and Sons smokehouse and, further up the coast in Seahouses is Swallowfish, another smokehouse which has been in business since 1843.

Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is the site the 245-acre estate near Woodbridge, Suffolk, that was home to one of England's most important archaeological discoveries.

Eighteen burial sites dating from the 7th century AD were found and forms the basis for the The Dig, a Netflix period drama,

There is a full-size sculpture of the 27-metre long burial ship and the chance to explore the burial grounds and visit a new exhibition.

The Crown at Woodbridge is a 16th century hotel and restaurant.

Katrina Palmer's Hello and Retreat installation in partnership with Metal will be launched in Southend-on Sea on 22 May 2021.

Norfolk

The white-tailed eagle, Britain's biggest bird of prey, is to be reintroduced to the Norfolk coast.

The eagle was hunted to extinction in England 240 years ago.

Approval from Natural England is being awaited and the bird will then add to the species in Norfolk and Lincolnshire's birding areas.

At Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, in Skegness, spot waders, little terns, skylarks, and snow bunting can be spotted.

In the Norfolk Broads there are grey herons, coots, and spoonbills; and, at Holkham National Nature Reserve, see pink-footed geese, barn owls and grey plovers.

The East Coast

Mayflower anniversary in Harwich, Essex

The 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims setting sail from Plymouth to cross the Atlantic tothe New World was in 2020.

The port town of Harwich, Essex is where the Mayflower's captain, Christopher Jones, lived and was twice wed.

Visitors can explore the recently-restored Christopher Jones House on Kings Head Street, where the captain once lived.

There is also the Mayflower Visitor Centre and a Mayflower exhibition hall.

The South Coast

Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is the sixth region in the UK to be named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, nature thrives on the idyllic Isle of Wight.

The Creative Coast

The Creative Coast is a new cultural experience fusing art and landscape, and the world's first art Geo-tour.

Margate

Margate celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Turner Gallery with new exhibitions from Steve McQueen and Barbara Walker, the bicentennial of Keats' death and the opening of a new Crab Museum.

White Cliffs Country

White Cliffs Country, which takes its name from Dover's chalk coastline, offers a number of coastal and countryside routes with panoramic views.

The White Cliffs Walking Festival takes place from 26 to 31 August 2021.

The South West Coast

The Cornish town of St Ives is known for its Blue Flag beaches, surfing scene and artistic community.

In June 2021, world leaders including new US President Joe Biden will gather nearby at Carbis Bay for the G7 Summit, with Visit Cornwall estimating it could provide Cornwall with a £50M economic boost.

The 630-mile South West Coast Path, the UK's longest National Trail begins at Minehead in Somerset and runs along the coastline of Exmoor, North Devon, Cornwall, South Devon and Dorset to Poole Harbour.

It takes about 7-8 weeks to complete with the current record just over 10 days!

Exmoor

Exmoor National Park has 26 sq miles of moorland, woodland, valleys, sea cliffs and farmland with open landscapes and coastal views, with the chance to spot wild red deer.
