Saudi Arabia is home to a vast array of flora and fauna including animals like the oryx, the Nubian ibex and the iconic Arabian leopard.

Through the National Center for Wildlife and the Saudi Green Initiative – designed to combat climate change and protect the environment – Saudi Arabia has committed to protecting 30 per cent of the kingdom's marine and land habitats by 2030.

Thirty per cent doesn't sound like a lot, but I guess any commitment is worthwhile. Meanwhile, visitors can acquaint themselves with the largely unknown natural wonders of Saudi Arabia with this list of attractions designed to celebrate the most recent Earth Day.

1. Al Ahsa

Home to one of the biggest oases in the world and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Al Ahsa boasts lush greenery, natural thermal springs, lively markets and tall, beautiful date palms.

Here you can climb the limestone hills of Al Qarah, visit Al Ahsa National Park, or take a stroll through Souq Al Qaisariya, one of the oldest markets in Saudi.

2. Jabal Shada, Al Baha

South of Jeddah, the Jabal Shada nature reserve is a lesser-explored biodiversity hot spot where unusual rock formations and flora and fauna that are endemic to the region can be found in quantity. It is also home to unique geological formations of caves that are engraved with Thamudic writings and drawings that date back 3,000 years.

For a unique treat, you can spend the night in one of the caves where Saudi architect Mohammed Nasser Al Shadwee has carved out eye-catching architectural structures. The cave resorts include bedrooms, kitchens and balconies with breathtaking views. 

3. Unveiling the red reefs of the Red Sea

Dive into the untouched allure of the Red Sea's hidden red reefs, a paradise waiting to be explored. Visitors can snorkel or dive into crystalline waters, discovering vibrant coral gardens and a kaleidoscope of marine life including schools of fish and elusive sea turtles.

4. Safari in Sharaan

In the heart of the 1,500-square-kilometre Sharaan Nature Reserve in AlUla, visitors can witness the raw beauty of Saudi's wildlife. The vast array of flora and fauna includes the endangered Arabian wolves, large-eared red foxes, red-necked ostriches, Arabian ibex and Idmi gazelles, as well as a variety of birds. Although rarely spotted, the critically endangered Arabian leopard can also be found here. 

5. Soudah's avian wonderland

Nestled in the heights of Soudah, in the lush Aseer region, visitors can indulge in the thrill of birdwatching while surrounded by breathtaking panoramas. Here you can witness a symphony of colours as rare and endemic bird species take flight against a backdrop of lush greenery.
