HC Andersens Cafe, Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark

Atmosphere is important when you dine out. Nyhavn has bags of it as well as having a massive choice of eating places.

Competition is fierce but this is the place to be at night in wonderful Copenhagen.

One word of warning. It's not cheap but most restaurant staff speak English and the meals we had were enjoyable.

H C Andersens café provided what we wanted, fish and chips – not a substantial plateful but adequate – which arrived with organic vegetables (carrots and spring onions) and a tasty dip.

We tarried and watched the world go by. The overhead heating and travel rugs provided on every seat helped sustain us as the night chill arrived.

It was an enjoyable experience and also an entertainment.

Yes, it was expensive, around £60, but that's the price you pay when the pound is struggling and you are in the middle of a city packed with tourists from around the world.
