Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire have been listed in the top 10 healthiest US states, according to the 28th annual report from the United Health Foundation and American Public Health Association.
The Association, which examined 35 measures including environment, obesity and air pollution, also highlighted Maine and Rhode Island. New England offers a range of outdoor activities and healthy pursuits.
Connecticut
Connecticut has parks and forests that cover a large part of the state.
Visitors will find an array of companies providing bike rental to enjoy all the different bike trails available in these areas covering mountain, trail and road biking.
Bear Mountain in Salisbury is Connecticut's highest peak, offering panoramic views of Connecticut and Massachusetts and trails that link with the Appalachian Trail.
Maine
Maine is known for its miles of coastline, availability of seafood and being home to the Acadia National Park.
In Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, there are numerous carriage trails with views through the mountains and valleys, running for almost 124 miles (200 km) from the coast.
Visitors today, can cycle and horse ride on the wild blueberry-lined, historic carriage trails, or hike into the higher regions of Acadia National Park.
In winter, Maine has an average annual snowfall of 100 inches, and areas that have easy trails for beginners and challenging black diamond slopes.
Maine's two largest resorts are Sugarloaf and Sunday River.
Massachusetts
In North Adams, the Berkshires, a new 46-room resort called Tourists will focus on guests with a passion for the outdoors.
There will be trails for hiking, riverside access for fishing or boating and a suspension footbridge over the river for further access to hiking trails and riverside activity.
New Hampshire
Mount Washington, the highest peak in the North Eastern US, offers hiking and mountain climbing.
The state is also home to the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the first mountain climbing cog in the world, which will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019.
The Mount Washington Auto Road is the oldest man-made attraction in the country.
Rhode Island
Newport, Rhode Island has a cliff walk with 3.4 miles of rocky cliffs, mansions and country houses.
The Newport Mansions were built in the late 19th century by entrepreneurs as their summer homes, have ocean views and are now open for public touring.
Rhode Island's waters have more over 2,000 shipwrecks to explore.
