Galveston has a fascinating history and the tour guides from Galveston's Historic Ghost Tours do an amazing job of bringing it to life.

As our tour guide began to talk about the "boneyard," I almost felt the need to bend down and lift my skirts, as if I were wearing Victorian-era clothing as we stepped back in time into the heart of the historic island. As you walk towards Broadway, a breeze seems to whisp by. Did you really just hear voices in the wind? Or are your ears deceiving you? You feel a shiver run down your spine as the guide continues to describe the destruction and death brought by the 1900 hurricane, were thousands, upon thousands lost their lives in a single night. Making Galveston the most haunted city in America.

As you continue on across broadway, you come to the Open Gate Mansion, also known as the Sealy Mansion. Built for his wife Magnolia in 1889, by George Sealy. They say it is one of the most photographed homes in Galveston, but that isn't what brought us here.

During the 1900 hurricane, this home became a refuge for over 400 persons, some who literally washed up on the doorstep. Do they still visit this place of refuge? Perhaps they are upstairs on the third floor were on a Broadway-style stage is in the attic playroom, where the Sealy children performed. It is said that the stage doors open and closes seemingly on their own and the children's mother Magnolia is said to still be walking its halls.

On the corner of 23rd and Avenue K is the former Normandy Inn, built-in 1912 and said to have once been beautiful. The building now is dilapidated with a sheet of plywood covering most of the doors and windows on the first floor. The large L-shaped 3 story frame house seems to loom oppressively over you as you look up to the second and third floor and search the windows as your guide describes the horror that is rumored to have taken place inside, Let's just say a house of Hell covers it all.

Considering a move to Galveston? On the tour, you will see a lovely home that you can rent no one has ever stayed for over 6 weeks. It seems being awakened by a headless murder victim is more than most people can take.

I don't want to give away all the secrets of the Historic Galveston Ghost Tour. It is definitely something that should be on your must-do list while you are in Galveston, and the company also offers other tours, which I definitely plan to do on my next trip.
