In Search Of Mayan Gold
Red Carpet. Bright lights. Flashing cameras. Celebrities and VIPs. Hollywood. If you thought all these were a backdrop for a Hollywood movie premiere, you wouldn't be too far off. This was the scene, however, on January 29, 2021 for the Grand Opening of the Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Cancun.
This brand new 648 room 4-Star Luxury Hotel, with water on both sides, sits on the spacious beaches of the narrow spit of land called Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancun's hotel zone. With this beach, the clean and crisp pools, the delicious food and drinks, and extraordinary entertainment, combined with Star Class and Adult Scene accommodations, you will definitely "Vacation Like A Star"
Upon my arrival I was greeted at the main lobby by none other than Elvis himself, accompanied by Batwoman and Dr. Peter Venkman of the Ghostbusters. The lobby itself is quite grand, the centerpiece being a walkway ceilinged by an LED display of flashing lights, ever changing patterns and colours, and a soundtrack fit for a blockbuster movie. On either side sit the main reception and the Star Class check-in, both areas furnished with modern and comfortable sitting areas. The entire lobby is bright and glittery with adornments that amaze the senses. I even got fast and furious with Brian O'Conner's green Mitsubishi Eclipse, and felt the world was not quite enough in James Bond's BMW Z8! If you are booked in the Adult Scene category, simply take a short carrito ride to your very own private reception area. And don't give your luggage a second thought. Marco (The Godfather) and his concierge team will sanitize your bags, and bring them directly to your rooms.
Leaving the lobby under the LED display, I am met by The Joker. He is operating a huge dj booth that looks out on the modern version of their own Hollywood Bowl. This Outdoor Theatre sound stage is the centerpiece for Planet Hollywood's concerts, shows, and nightly entertainment offered up by their own Animation Team. When you're there make sure you look for Paula, Kevin, Isabella, and Stephanie. But look closely, they could be dressed as any of your favourite movie stars!
The amphitheatre is flanked on two sides by a covered terrace which houses all the dining options. From French and Italian dishes to traditional East Indian and Mexican fare, your appetites will all be satiated. This concourse also features shopping, cafes, bars, a disco nightclub, and, yes, even a movie theatre. You can also find the PHit gym and the PH Spa and Beauty Bar here as well.
From the concourse you can walk a straight line along the wide promenade sidewalks and end up at the expansive beach areas, your toes burrowing into the soft, white sand. There are plenty of loungers for you to laze away the sun-filled days, and palapas and sombrillas to offer shade when you need it. The friendly, eager staff will keep you hydrated and fed with non-stop service from the two beach bars, and if a gentle massage with the sounds of the ocean waves lapping up on the beach is appealing to you, a short walk to the PH Spa Beach Palapa will get you back on track.
At any point while strolling along the Promenade walkways you can detour over to one of the four sparkling pools, including the Jurassic Splash Park and Shipwreck Cove waterpark for the kid in all of us. While there, stop to cheer on the Flow Rider enthusiasts, and take a slow, easy trip around the Lazy River. Be sure to stop in at the grotto bar for one of Mad Max's concoctions, but keep an eye out for it. If you miss it you'll have to go all the way around again!
The three other pools are all close to the beach, two are geared for families, and the adult only pool in the Adult Scene section. All pools offer great bar and food service, loungers and umbrellas, and the typical excellent service from dear Estefania and her pool service crew. Be sure to stop at the Star Class Bar and Grill for some great stories and anecdotes from Francisco and Sofia! Should you reserve a private cabaña, with plunge pool and enclosed sitting area, Rogelio will look after you with his excellent personality and speedy service.
Every movie star needs to chill every now and then, whether it's to clean up and refresh, or simply to grab a quick nap between takes. Most ground floor rooms are swim outs with a private plunge pool and loungers. All upper floor rooms have a view of the gardens, pools and ocean. Their phabulous hypoallergenic beds and luxurious linens are always nominated in the best supporting categories. The spa-like bathrooms with double sinks and rain showers will make you feel like an A-lister. Snuggle into your plush bathrobe and slippers, order some 24/7 room service, set your playlists with resort-wide wifi, and relax on your balcony staring off into the multi-hued greens and blues of the Caribbean.
While the movie stars are chilling, the producers need their time as well. The Producer's Suite is a two-bedroom suite, which includes a stocked bar, a pool table, comfortable sitting area, and an outside space with jacuzzis, loungers, cabañas and a dining area. With the capability of extending the Producer's Suite to three and four bedrooms, this is the perfect opportunity to "book your bubble"!
