Madeira wins Europe’s leading island destination

AO-Madeira-1

Madeira has won Europe's leading island destination, at the World Travel Award, for the 8th year running.

Madeira, the Portuguese archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, is now highlighting itself as a winter sun destination.

The archipelago is formed by a set of islands, the main and only inhabited being Madeira and Porto Santo.

The archipelago has a subtropical climate with mild temperatures throughout the year.

Even in the heart of winter, temperatures average 20°C.

The island's rugged coastline, lush forests, and volcanic terrain offer a diverse range of outdoor activities.

There's the chance to hike along the Levadas (irrigation channels) and explore volcanic caves, while Madeira's botanical gardens and parks have a wide range of exotic plants.

The Laurissilva Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Madeira is also known for its gastronomy, offering fresh seafood, exotic fruits and delicious wines, with local specialties like 'espada', black scabbardfish and 'bolo do caco', a traditional garlic bread.

The towns and villages of Madeira have their character and history.

The casinhas de Santana are one of the most recognisable houses and architectural styles in Madeira.

Funchal, the capital, offers museums, historic sites and the Mercado dos Lavradores food market.
