New York City’s beachfront backyard

Long Island is known as New York City's Beachfront Backyard.

The area is known for its ocean beaches, rich presidential and revolutionary history and the Hamptons.

Long Island is also home to quaint downtown villages and dining and shopping options.

The destination has also been rated as one of the "Top 10 Wine Regions in the World" by Wine Enthusiast.

It is also is home to some of the oldest lighthouses in the United States including the Montauk Lighthouse, authorized by President George Washington in 1792.

Washington also formed the "Culper Spy Ring" on Long Island, a secret group of men and women who ferried information on British activity to the Continental Army.

Many of the sites associated with the spy ring are open to the public.

Surfers are attracted to Long Island's shores, as well as sailors, yachtsmen and fishermen.

Gold Coast Mansion

On the destination's north shore, travellers will find the Gold Coast Mansions – the inspiration behind F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'.

Built during America's "Roaring 20's", more than 200 of the mansions survive today and are available for overnight stays, tours and events.

A top wine region

Listed as one of the Top 10 Wine Regions in the World, Long Island has more than 60 wineries and benefits from moderate temperatures and ideal soil conditions.

The region produces over 500,000 cases of wine annually with the most popular varietals including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
