Opera Australia is Australia's national opera company, performing more than 700 performances a year across the country including at the Sydney Opera House, Arts Centre Melbourne.

It also performs outdoor concerts on Sydney Harbour each year in March and April.

Australia's national opera company was started when a band of idealists, including butchers, pharmacists and newsagents, gave up their day jobs to celebrate the 1956 Mozart bicentenary with a season of four of his operas.

Today, Opera Australia is Australia's largest arts employer, with annual seasons showcasing the world's great opera and music theatre repertoire.

A touring programme stage works in regional Australia, and with performance broadcasts in cinemas and on national television and radio.
