Rocky Mountaineer : Rockies to the Red Rocks, Colorado

Rocky Mountaineer, which operates multi-day, daytime train journeys in glass-domed train coaches, will launch a new route through Colorado in 2021.

The two-day rail journey will be between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah, with an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

It can also be done eastbound, from Moab to Denver.

The new route will launch with a preview season of 40 departures across 10 weeks from August to October 2021.

The company is working with hotels and tour operators to curate custom holiday packages that feature tours, activities, and stays in Denver.

Before starting the trip, visitors will have the opportunity to spend a few nights exploring the 'Mile-High' city of Denver, with its eclectic al-fresco dining, thriving cultural scene and 300 days of sunshine.

Soon after their departure from Denver, travellers will cross the Continental Divide with views of rugged Byers Canyon, Gore Canyon and the Colorado River.

It then arrives at the mountain town of Glenwood Springs.

The second day will see the Rocky Mountaineer heading south west for towards the border of Utah.

Travellers will see the morning light 'bounce' off the Roan Cliffs and Mount Lincoln, the red rock formations lining the cliffs in Ruby Canyon and Mount Peale.

Combine the trip

Visitors can combine the trip with other parts of Colorado, which is home to four national parks, including the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park.

The Western Slope is home to former gold-rush mining towns, such as Durango and the Mesa Verde National Park.

Rail enthusiasts can also take the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
