Sensational Stays: Inn Upon Moon River Plantation

The Claytors share a life together rooted in music, storytelling, and the fondness for meaningful human connection. Travelers drawn to distinctive accommodations often search for a sense of place, but the Claytors' journey offers something equally compelling: a sense of purpose. Before they became innkeepers, they shared a passion for blues music and the culture surrounding it. Elizabeth's Louisiana upbringing immersed her in gospel and blues traditions, while David's introduction came through afternoons spent listening to records with his grandfather in upstate New York. The couple revived an abandoned blues club in Florida, transforming it into a respected destination for music lovers. The experience allowed them to assemble a remarkable collection of blues-related art, memorabilia, and stories while developing deep connections within the music community.

After years at Dave's CC Club (later known as the Bradfordville Blues Club), the couple sought a new way to share their passion for music, history, and hospitality. In 2010, they opened Inn Upon Moon River Plantation, transforming a historic 1904 home in downtown Chester into a bed-and-breakfast that reflects both their personal journey and their lifelong commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

Each room at the Inn Upon Moon River Plantation is named after a blues region, and during my visit I stayed in the Chicago Room. Spacious and comfy, I easily felt at home amongst the four-post bed, hardwood floor, and fireplace. The room offers a view of the grounds, which is home to a 40' x 60' patio sometimes housing evening concerts. The en suite bath features a walk-in shower, and I rested well upon the king mattress. Other rooms include the Delta, Memphis, and Piedmont. A double suite combines the Chicago and Memphis rooms and is great for traveling families. <2 – inset, left, photo of property>

What ultimately distinguishes Inn Upon Moon River Plantation is not Claytors' collection of artifacts (which are in abundance and a whole lot of fun to peruse) or their musical knowledge, but their commitment to conversation. Guests frequently become friends, and the deep wood breakfast table becomes a gathering place to exchange experiences about music and travel.
