The Elmwood Village neighborhood in Buffalo, New York is steeped with history, hip in style, and home to a vibrant community embracing the nickname ofCity of Good Neighbors. The perfect place to stay and embrace everything Elmwood has to offer is the InnBuffalo off Elmwood, which reflects the area's dedication to historic preservation. In 1980, Elmwood Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and InnBuffalo, built in 1898, is part of that history—past and present.
In 2011, Joseph and Ellen Lettieri purchased the mansion home built by businessman Herbert Hills Hewitt, founder of American Brass Co. and patent creator. The Lettieris renovated the home, which now features 13 suites and spacious common areas—including a library, dining area, and a billiards room. Billed as "Victorian charm with contemporary conveniences," InnBuffalo is much more. Contemporary artwork melds with Victorian and 20th century antiques. The Inn is part refined work in progress as Joe—as he is known around the city—uncovers details like gilded wallpaper and tracks down original mantels and millwork removed from the property by previous owners. Along with an onyx fireplace, wall tapestries and tile work, many of the original, Tiffany-leaded glass windows remain. The large, second-floor Hewitt Suite is adorned with the original quarter sawn cherry wood and features and ensuite bath with a rare Victorian-era needle-spray shower.
Families can book the adjoining Art Nouveau East and West rooms named after the original stenciling found on this third-floor grand suite overlooking tree-lined Lafayette Avenue. Both rooms are self-sustaining with ensuite bathroom, complete with walk-in, luxury shower and heated marble floors.
Elmwood is the perfect hopping off point for everything else in Buffalo and the Niagara Falls area. The iconic falls are just 19 miles to the north. Elmwood is bordered by Millionaire's Row and a park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
The Buffalo Wing Trail runs through Elmwood and the originator of the spicy chicken wing, The Anchor Bar, is a short drive from the Inn.
INNKEEPERS TIP: Swing down to Allen Burger Venture for a bite to eat and cold beer. Burgers are the specialty here but upgrade the sides—ABV serves the fillet mignon of tater tots! Thirteen dry-aged, grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free Angus burgers make the specialty menu, which are complemented by beef alternatives like salmon, turkey, black bean, lamb, and chicken. Beyond a nearly perfect selection of beer, ABV offers a sensational selection of whiskeys.
