The Inn at Foster Falls is living history in Southwest Virginia. Built in 1887 during the town's iron ore boom, the inn was initially a hub for dignitaries and teachers visiting the thriving village. In 1914, the iron furnace ceased operations, and the inn transformed into a school. In 1940, a fire gutted the building, leaving only the original brick walls, which still stand today. The home was rebuilt, but was ultimately abandoned, and it sat empty for over 30 years. Eventually, the old railroad transformed into the 57-mile New River Trail, and Foster Falls State Park opened, which brought visitors to the area seeking out natural beauty. In 1995, the inn underwent a slow, careful restoration by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and now the inn welcomes guests looking to relax in luxury near nature or explore the creativity and heritage of the surrounding small towns in Southwest Virginia.
The hallways and shared spaces are adorned with photos from local artists whose subjects are local sites. There are two banquet rooms, a parlor, and a catering kitchen for those looking to have an event at the Inn. Dinner (Wednesday through Sunday) is served via the 1887 dining experience, a chef's choice meal served promptly at 6:00 p.m. after a social hour with salads, hors d'oeuvres. Sample entrees include Beef Bourguignon and pan roasted trout.
There are a ton of great things to do in Wytheville if you complete your New River Trail State Park checklist early. The Big Walker Lookout (1st photo) harkens back to the time of roadside attractions, and Fort Chiswell Animal Park is great for both adults and families. The West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery are only a quick drive away.
