The Denbigh and Flint Show

A fine day out in the Welsh countryside

The Denbigh and Flint is a one-day agricultural show held annually on the third Thursday in August in Denbigh, North Wales.

The show is a celebration of Welsh rural life with livestock and horse competitions, local food and crafts, vintage machinery displays, trade stands and main-ring events throughout the day.

It provides the 'big day out' for the Flint and Denbigh communities while also attracting those, from far wider afield, who enjoy a day a fine day out in the countryside.

The Denbighshire and Flintshire Agricultural Society, which Organises the show, has a history stretching back to its formation at the Black Lion Hotel in Mold in July 1839.

A showcase for rural life in the Principality

The Denbigh and Flint Show is the annual get-together of families, friends and the Denbighshire farming and agricultural communities.

Agricultural shows are a particularly enjoyable aspect of country life in the UK.

Rural communities are invariably centred around small towns and villages and farming families, by their nature, will be working and living in even more secluded environments.

The local agriculture show is one of the few regular events in the calendar when all can come together.

Those who rear cattle, sheep and heavy and light horses will enter their prided animals in friendly competition.

The 'fur and feather' tent will be will show rabbits and guinea pigs along with 'fancy cockerels, hens and pigeons while others will Have arts and crafts displays.

Also within the show ground there will be displays of vintage cars and agricultural machinery and the food and drink 'village' highlighting and selling local produce, wines and ciders.

In the trade area one will find rows of gleaming tractors and other farming machinery.

And finally there is going to be at least one show ring and a main arena where displays and presentations take place form open to close.

Growing up in Somerset, my father would take me to the local, one-day Bridgwater Agricultural Show and also the much bigger and three-day Bath and West Show.

Whole the Bridgwater is now a fading memory, the Bath and West is still going strong.

As are hundreds of others throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

This was my first visit to the Denbigh and Flint Show and, while not the biggest, was one of the most enjoyable Ann and I have attended.

That this is a real community focused agricultural show is obvious from first arriving.

There is much to take in without the scale of the show being daunting.

And a sense of pride in being part of a Denbighshire community that is proudly Welsh is evident.

As is the togetherness of those participating in the show or just turning up for a great day out.

While Ann was drawn to the arts and craft stalls and the artisan bread and chutneys on offer, I managed to get in a couple of pints of Rose's cider and listen to the live music acts performing on the back of large lorry.

The main arena had the finals of the various showing classes; the horse and hounds display and the quad bike stunt team, with the horse relay competition as a finale.

Knowing exactly when the Denbigh and Flint Show is held made it easy to put Thursday 19 August 2027 in the diary.
