The Miravalles Volcano National Park
The Miravalles Volcano National Park – Jorge Manuel Dengo, which is located in the north-western region of Guanacaste, has become the country's 29th national park.
Named after environmentalist Jorge Manuel Dengo Obregón, the 5,000 hectare park features some of Costa Rica's biggest geothermal fields and houses fauna species such as jaguars, ocelots, cougars and tapirs.
The park's defining feature is the 6,654ft tall Miravalles Volcano which gives life to the popular neighbouring thermal hot springs.
This latest addition to Costa Rica's repertoire of national parks now means that 25% of the country's land mass is protected under conservation laws.
