Valle d'Aosta, the smallest Italian region, is located in the alps and bordered by France and Switzerland.

The valley is surrounded by some of Europe's highest peaks such as Cervino, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc.

Major ski resorts include Courmayeur and Cervinia.

The region's countryside is dotted with medieval castles and fortresses, such as the 14th-century Castello Fénis and Castello di Verrès.

Aosta, the region's capital, is close to the ski resorts and the Gran Paradiso National Park, which has an alpine botanical garden, trails and wildlife like ibexes and eagles.

Porta Praetoria

This was the ancient Roman gateway to Augusta Pretoria (as Aosta was known), with three openings that are still visible today.

The city walls of Augusta Praetoria are still in evidence in, particularly at the crossroads with Via Vevey.

This ancient theatre's southern facade is still visible today, with its additional arches, semi-circular tiered area that hosted guests, and the foundation of the wall that acted as the backdrop.
