Welsh Rarebits Hotels of Distinction

Welsh Rarebits Hotels of Distinction has nearly 30 independently owned hotels spread across the Wales coast and countryside.

Members range from country house hotels, boutique boltholes and romantic retreats to relaxing spas and historic inns as well as tasty restaurants with rooms.

Founded over 30 years ago, membership of the Rarebits Club is by invitation only.

North Wales

This region takes in the north coast, Anglesy and the Llŷn Peninsula.

The Snowdonia National Park has 2,000 miles of walking routes including up to Mount Snowdon.

Welsh Rarebits also has two hotels and a serviced cottage suite in the Italianate village of Portmeirion.

Over the Menai Strait in Anglesey there is the 400 year-old Bull, a coaching inn on the coast at Beaumaris.

There is also the Grade II listed Château Rhianfa.

Inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley, Sir John Hay-Williams built Château Rhianfa for his wife and daughters between 1849 and 1851.

Mid Wales

This region takes in the rural heartland of Wales stretching from the border country to the Ceredigion Heritage Coast.

It offers the chance to see bottlenose dolphins in Cardigan Bay's while the Brecon Beacons National Park lies in the southern corner.

The park is a place to look out for rare Red Kites by day and at is also Wales first International Dark Skies Reserve.

The Rarebits Collection includes a further 11 hotels throughout mid-Wales including the Trefeddian, a family hotel on the coast at Aberdyfi and Gliffaes Country House Hotel.

Gliffaes is set in 33 acres of grounds including a 19th century arboretum and has its own stretch of the river Usk offering game and fly fishing in season.

Located on a hillside among protected woodlands, Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa is part of a 24,000 acre estate, offering birdwatching, clay shooting and classic fly fishing.

Other wellknown hotels in the collection include the boutique Harbourmaster at Aberaeron, Y Talbot at Tregaron, which has an AA two rosette restaurant and The Bear, an old coaching inn in the centre of Crickhowell.

South Wales

This area ranges from Cardiff in the east to Britain's smallest city of St Davids in the west.

It offers the chance to explore the Wye Valley, the sands of the Gower Peninsula and the industrial heritage in the South Wales Valleys.

The Carmarthenshire countryside inspired Dylan Thomas and there is Pembrokeshire's 186 mile long coast path in Britain's only Coastal National Park.

Welsh Rarebits hotels include Holm House, a boutique spa hotel on the coast at Penarth and, a little inland in Llandeilo, the recently refurbished Cawdor.At Brechfa, just outside Carmarthen is Tŷ Mawr Country Hotel, which dates back to the 15th century.

On a cliff in the south coast resort of Saundersfoot is St Brides Spa Hotel with views over Carmarthen Bay and the edge of Narbeth is The Grove.

Crug Glâs Country House offers boutique accommodation in individually designed rooms on a 600 acre working farm and,in the seaside of Newport, is Georgian townhouse Llys Meddyg restaurant with rooms.
