Woensel West - Coloring the City

Woensel West district in Eindhoven is an interesting success story of rehabilitating neighborhoods in a creative and communal way, without falling into the trap of gentrification.

The neighborhood, which started as Philip's working-class district, used to be known as a problematic area, that has been coping with major social and economic problems like prostitution and crime.

A few years ago the community council decided to make improvements. They join forces with housing corporations, artists, designers and volunteers in order to change the image and atmosphere of the neighborhood.

Many of the old houses were replaced with completely new ones, which are painted in different colors, chosen by the owners of the houses.

Some of the houses also have unique murals, dedicated to great inventors and scientists.

The main project is a unique complex along Edisonstraat, (the main street of the neighborhood), called: the Woensel Westside stores. It includes 45 unique stores, small businesses and catering venues, most of which are owned by residents of the neighborhood. This creates both living and a sense of community.

If you are a vintage lover, you may found treasures here, at shops like Yetunde, Strange Avenue and, Van Alles en co, which is also a coffee bar.

Today, Woensel West is a colorful, hip, dynamic, upcoming and lively district. A mix of cultures that really worth a visit when you are in Eindhoven.
