A celebration of farming and rural life
The annual Royal Cheshire County Show has been attracting country and town folk for well over 180 years and is one of the highlights in the county's calendar.
It is also a shining example of the many agricultural and countryside shows held throughout the UK. during the late spring and summer months
The show brings together shire horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and rare breed livestock and there are any number of marquees and stalls ablaze with flower displays and arts and crafts along with local produce.
These surround the main events arena along with the Village Green with food and drink and music and dance performances and cookery demonstrations.
While the Royal Cheshire County Show remains firmly rooted in the county's farming communities, it also provides a wonderful day out for all.
A countryside coming together of one and all
The Royal Cheshire County Show, which has long been the annual agricultural gathering for folks in this part of northwest England, received its Royal status in 2016.
This came two years before the Cheshire Agricultural Society celebrated its180th anniversary.
With farming, by its very nature an all-consuming pursuit, the Cheshire show was often the one occasion for the county's farming community to come together.
It was the chance for farming families to meet and greet, to parade their animals and livestock, checkout the latest agricultural vehicles and machinery and have an all-round good day out.
Today, the Royal Cheshire offers the same great day out but for anyone who appreciates the countryside and rural pursuits.
The livestock
The Cheshire Show has hundreds of livestock classes with entrants competing for trophies and rosettes.
This allows visitors to come into close contact with light and heavy horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs with many rare breeds.
There are also displays of poultry, fancy pigeons, and rabbits along with the always popular dog shows.
Agricultural machinery
The show also brings together a large collection of vintage vehicles including tractors, cars, commercial vehicles along with working demonstrations of farm equipment.
Needles- to-say there is a large area devoted to state-of-the-art tractors, combine harvesters and farming equipment, and implements.
Village Green
The Village Green area is where visitors will find the food stalls food and coffee allows along with refreshments that are a little stronger including real ales and excellent Cheshire cider.
The Village also has a programme of live entertainment from brass bands, choirs, and Morris Dancers.
The main ring
The centrally located Main Ring offers a programme of displays, demonstrations, and entertainment throughout the day.
Highlights will include birds of prey, pipe bands and the grand parades of hors drawn carriages and drays, vintage vehicles, and livestock.
A second arena has the show jumping and there are many other smaller areas where things will be happening to while away 15 minutes or so.
So good to be back
We were lucky enough to get back to the Royal Cheshire County Show in 2021, after its year's Covid enforced absence.
After so many months of enforced lockdown, the atmosphere at the show was embracingly infectious.
A wonderful day out in the Cheshire countryside.
Dates for 2022
The next Royal Cheshire County Show will be on 21 and 22 June 2022.
