Cycle and walking trails along the Celtic Routes

AO-Celtic-Routes-1

The Celtic Routes take in the three Irish counties of Wicklow, Waterford and Wexford, and the three Welsh counties of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.

Scenic cycling and walking paths across the Celtic Routes include :

Ireland

Dungarvan, Waterford

The Waterford Greenway was once a Victorian railway line that has been converted into a 28 mile pathway for cycling and hiking.

It forms a part of EuroVelo, a network of 17 long-distance cycling routes dotted around Europe.

With 11 bridges, three viaducts, and a 400m long tunnel, the route takes in the coastal town of St. Garvan, named after the saint who founded a monastery here in the 7th century.

There is also the 6 km route from Ballinroad to Durrow to reach An Rinn, Waterford's Gaeltacht region (an Irish language speaking area), and views of Dungarvan Bay from Helvick Head.

Wicklow Way, Wicklow

Just south of Dublin, County Wicklow, which is known as The Garden of Ireland, is a expanse of coastline, woodland and mountains, through which runs the country's most popular walking trail.

The 127km Wicklow Way, Ireland's oldest marked trail, begins in Dublin's southern suburb of Rathfarnham before winding across the Dublin and Wicklow uplands, then through the rolling hills of southwest County Wicklow, to finish in the small Wicklow-Carlow border village of Clonegal.

Due to its challenging paths and varying terrain, the Wicklow Way is best for experienced cyclists. However, the Blessington Greenway provides a more relaxed alternative while still providing views of the 5,000-acre reservoir and its surrounding greenery.

Courtown Woodland Walks, Wexford

The Eurovelo cycling route through south County Wexford provides gentle roads suitable for any level.

The route goes on an off the beaten track as it explores lesser-known highways and byways along Wexford's coastlines and countryside.

Starting at Rosslare Harbour, this route takes in quiet, scenic country roads and villages towards Ballyhack.

Wales

Ammanford, Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire has cycling routes for all cycling abilities.

Previously a mining town, Ammanford is located near the Brecon Beacons and is famously known as the location of the battle between King Arthur and the enchanted wild boar, Twrch Trwyth.

The Amman Valley Trail follows the Amman River on the 7-mile cycle route past meadows, fields full of colourful wildflowers and views of the Brecon Beacons, before reaching the village of Brynamman located beneath the imposing Black Mountain.

For exploring the area on foot, a 5.5 mile long route follows the River Amman.

Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire

A cycling trail follows the disused Saundersfoot Railway.

Built in 1835 to link the ironworks and nearby coalmines to the harbour, this route takes in the industrial history of Saundersfoot – a large village located on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

At the end of the trail, there's the chance to explore the ruins of Grove Colliery or the sands of Saundersfoot beach.

The Saundersfoot Heritage Trail offers an historical tour of the village.

Aberystwyth, Ceredigion

Known for hosting the Aberystwyth Cycle Festival, Ceredigion offers the chance to cycle or walk the Ystwyth Trail along the former Aberystwyth to Carmarthen railway line.

Beginning at Aberystwyth, the path skirts round Pendinas and its Iron Age hillfort, then follows the River Ystwyth to Llanilar village and picnic sites at Trawsgoed.

Another family friendly section takes you along Cors Caron, a nature reserve covering a vast area of protected wetland.

Bwlch Nant yr Arian features rugged mountain bike trails with epic scenery of the Cambrian Mountains and the 6-mile section of the Ceredigion Coast Path from Aberystwyth to Borth.
