Great Sand Dunes receives International Dark Sky Park status, Colarado
The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, which is located beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado, has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park.
It is the second of Colorado's four national parks to be given this status.
The designation recognises Great Sand Dunes for the exceptional quality of its dark night skies and for the park's commitment to preserving and educating about the night sky.
Despite being land-locked, these are the tallest dunes in the United States and created from thousands of years of sand travelling from mountain streams and playa lakes on the San Luis Valley floor.
The park, which covers 40,000 acres and with the highest of the dunes reaching 750 feet, provides an unusual contrast to the snow-capped peaks.
