There are many reasons why the small city of Asheville North Carolina might be on a European's mind map— perhaps even more than it is for many Americans who live far from the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains nearby. In the very center of this 11th largest city in the Southeastern US state of North Carolina is a hotel that you will find in the registry of Historic Hotels of America—- Haywood Park Hotel.

You feel history as you walk down the ramp in the hotel lobby next to a Model A Ford on display.Scattered around the lobby you also find mannikins wearing fashions from the 1920's.Black and white archival photos on the walls and signage tells you that this hotel was once THE department store of Asheville's downtown. It was originally named Bon Marché in homage to one of the first department stores of Paris. If you time it right, you might be arriving just when one of the regular Lindy Hops to a live Big Band is held in one of its downstairs watering holes that feels snug with walnut or walnut stained interiors.

More likely though, you too will try to time your visit to the spectacular autumnal color spectacle made by Mother Nature in the nearby Great Smokey Mountain National Park.Even if you aren't a hiker, most will also find driving through the stunning surrounds of the Blue Ridge Mountains to be restorative.

The area's natural beauty is perhaps one reason why Asheville has become a draw for artists and artisans— and musicians.Haywood Park Hotel's calling card is not only its early 20th Century flavor but also its location steps from the art district, performance venues and the many fine dining restaurants that cater to the relatively well-heeled tourists that flock to the area to marvel at the nearby Biltmore Estate or just to chill. The Haywood Park Hotel — though priced more as a mid-range hotel— also is geared to pamperwith jacuzzis in each suite and a spa that you access in its lobby.Guests arriving later in the day are greeted with a glass of champagne.

Europeans might especially find the dimensions of the spacious suites in the hotel somewhat astounding and luxurious. The furnishings are mainly antiques by an American timeframe definition, all kept in top condition.Your king-sized bed will seem small in its larger space room.

Expect luxury with a mid-range hotel price tag.
