Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located some 125 kilometers off the north coast of Africa.

Of volcanic origin, the greatest recorded eruptions occurredbetween 1730 and 1736 in the area now the Timanfaya National Park.

The island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1993, and it is known for its unique volcanic landscapes, including Timanfaya, Cueva de los Verdes, and Playa de Papagayo.

The island's attractions include its volcanic landscapes, palm tree-fringed beaches, and the production of wines.

Lanzarote is also known for the work of the artist-architect César Manrique, whose motto was Art into nature, nature into art'.

Manrique promoted a model of intervention based on the fundamentals of sustainability that sought to safeguard the island's natural heritage and culture.

This model proved to be determining factor in the declaration of Lanzarote as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
