San Antonio, Texas

As the seventh-largest city in the nation and one of the fastest growing, San Antonio is located in south cental Texas.

It has a rich colonial heritage with The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum to commemorate the battle for Texan independence from Mexico.

Following the San Antonio River, the miles-long River Walk is a pedestrian promenade lined with cafes and shops.



Saving the Alamo

In March 1836 some 189 Texians and Tejanos gave their lives at the Alamo for Texas liberty.

There is an ongoing project to 'restore dignity and reverence' to the Alamo including :

restoration of the 1836 mission footprint so visitors can 'learn about history the way it happened, where it happened'

removal ofdistractions from the historic mission footprint to pay respect to all those who lived, fought and died at the Alamo, and

construction of a museum and visitor centre to honour the Shrine of Texas Liberty.

SeaWorld San Antonio

SeaWorld San Antonio will unveil its Texas Stringray wooden roller coaster in Spring 2020.

It will become the tallest, fastest and longest wooden coaster in Texas and feature a drop of 100 feet with more than 15 airtime hills with a top speed of 55 miles per hour.

SeaWorld has also opened the Turtle Reef habitat that enables an up-close look at threatened and endangered sea turtles while learning about the threats the species face in the wild.

Its 126,000-gallon coral reef-themed environment, with natural bio filtration, features rescued and non-releasable green sea turtles, along with hundreds of multi-colored Caribbean fish.

The San Antonio Zoo

The Zoo has redesigned its rhinoceros habitat with new trees and landscape, a viewing deck, waterfall with creek and a mud wallow.

The habitat embraces zebras, crown cranes, waterbucks, sitatungas and marbou storks and connects to the giraffe habitat allowing the animals to move freely between areas in a savanna-like setting.

Southtown

At the southern tip of historic downtown lies Southtown, an eclectic arts district defined by its 1800s German architecture, repurposed warehouses, art galleries and culinary scene.

Broadway Street

Just north of downtown, Broadway Street connects many of San Antonio's significant cultural attractions including :

  • the San Antonio Museum of Art
  • The DoSeum, Brackenridge Park
  • Witte Museum
  • San Antonio Zoo
  • Japanese Tea Gardens
  • San Antonio Botanical Garden, and
  • the McNay Art Museum.

A $42 million Broadway Street Corridor project will transform the street into bike and pedestrian-friendly landscaped boulevard.

Canopy by Hilton

Canopy by Hilton, which is to open in River Walk in late 2020, will integrate the Civil War-era Alamo Fish Market building into its 22-story design, with a restaurant with an outdoor terrace overlooking the River Walk.

Marriott Rivercenter

As one of the largest hotels in downtown San Antonio, Marriott will have received a multi-million-dollar remodel incorporating white limestone and local artistic glassmakers by February 2020.
