Sensational Stays: Blue Sage by HoneyTree
The vast and dark Lone Star State sky stretches above Texas wine country filling the heavens with stars as a calm silence allows visitors to tune into solitude, or a romantic couples night. The sky, seen from my room's rooftop balcony—complete with a Japanese soaking tub, candles, and café-style table and chairs—is only one element making Blue Sage in Fredericksburg, TX a sensational stay. My treetop hideaway located in a small compound of tiny residences outside of town is aptly named The Rooftop Stargazer (No. 11) … and I did not want to leave.
Owners Jacob and Katie turned their search for a rural escape into a collection of distinctive retreats designed for couples and travelers looking to slow down, reconnect, or celebrate something special. As designers, builders, and operators their creative energy has produced 17 individually designed units, each with its own personality. Their creation, Honeytree accommodations, is divided between a set of original treehouses and Blue Sage (where I stayed), a hillside collection featuring imaginative spaces such as a floating A-frame and tree homes made for taking in the view.
I have already given a description of the rooftop of my room, but I should say I spent as many waking moments up there as I did in the room itself. For someone who is 6' 2" I appreciate a large tub; it is a luxury I only get to enjoy on select occasions—so I took full advantage of it here. I spent the mornings on the roof with my coffee and a book, often losing my place as my eyes wandered to the sprawling Texas countryside. But I must give the interior of No. 11 its due credit as well. I enjoyed the selection of albums, which I popped onto the record player while making my coffee or getting ready to go out into Fredericksburg for the day. A well-appointed kitchen area allowed me to heat up leftovers and make quality drinks, and the plush King bed allowed me to easily drift off to sleep while enjoying the view through a massive window overlooking the private deck.
Privacy and relaxation are part of the appeal, but so is the location. Fredericksburg offers an inviting mix of small-town charm, Texas history, food, and outdoor adventure. Hike the dramatic granite landscape of Enchanted Rock, explore the exhibits at the National Museum of the Pacific War, or wander Main Street in search of local shops and winery tasting rooms.
