Sensational Stays: Hotel Roanoke
Built by the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1882 to accommodate travelers, the original hotel structure was modest. There was big demand for lodging in turn of the century Roanoke, and the building evolved into a grand Tudor-style hotel throughout the early 20th century. In 1989, after more than 100 years of service, the hotel closed. And a community-led effort saved Hotel Roanoke from demolition. After extensive renovations, the hotel reopened in 1995 combining historic charm with modern amenities.
Hotel Roanoke offers guestrooms and suites. A newly created wellness floor features allergy-friendly rooms maintained by state-of-the-art filtration and special mattresses and pillows. I stayed in a standard King Bed with a view of the courtyard. Upgraded views include outdoor patios on the ground floor and deluxe corner rooms. King premium rooms feature a four-post bed and a large room with desk, chair, and loveseat. Junior suites come in king, queen, or twin-double sizes and feature an oversized chair with ottoman in a large room. The grandest accommodation is the Governor Suite, a 1,680 sq. ft. penthouse with a fireplace in the living room, dining room and kitchenette, and a rooftop terrace.
Dining at Hotel Roanoke is as wonderful as the accommodations. Guests can dine formally in The Regency Room, which caries a AAA Four Diamond rating, or be a bit more casual at the open-kitchen concept Pine Room, a converted writing room once a WWII officer's club. An elegant, circular bar—1882—is on the main floor and serves until 1:00 a.m. on the weekends. 2024 marks the beginning of new renovations with a $14-million technology and design makeover, including a new spa suite.
Hotel amenities are many, including a spacious business center, concierge service, a sundry and souvenir shop, fitness room, and a pool and hot tub. Attached to the hotel is a 63,000- square-foot, high-tech conference center and rentable meeting rooms. The hotel aims to be completely accessible, from the design of the business center to roll in showers.
Roanoke, Virginia, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture. It is popular with outdoor enthusiasts for its hiking and biking, but Downtown has many popular spots like Center In The Square, home of the Roanoke Pinball Museum and Six & Sky restaurant. I always make sure to visit Big Lick Brewing Co. or Three Notch'd Craft Kitchen & Brewery while in town. The Taubman Museum of Art and the iconic Roanoke Star (with panoramic views of the city and mountains) are always worth a visit.
