Sensational Stays: The Gin
Originally built in 1926 as the Robert E. Lee Hotel, this landmark has evolved over the decades, catering to travelers drawn to its timeless architecture. In 2014, renovations transformed the building into a chic boutique hotel, preserving its historic charm while enhancing the comfort of the 39 guestrooms. Recently rebranded as The Gin in 2020, the hotel reflects Lexington's evolving cultural landscape, embracing its legacy while looking forward to a new chapter in Southern hospitality. The name Robert E. Lee—US Civil War General and president of the nearby college that would become Washington and Lee University—is still emblazoned across the front.
The Gin offers standard king and queen rooms and 1-room suites. Suites can sleep up to three and come with a sofa bed. Standard amenities include a coffee maker, a hair dryer and iron, and a flat screen TV. The best part of front facing rooms is the view of downtown Lexington, a mix of original neon and mountainous horizon. No pets are allowed at The Gin, and there is ample parking around back of the building.
If you plan to stay in one night, the Juniper Lounge offers a seasonal menu complemented by specialty cocktails, craft beer, and a wine list featuring a few Virginia selections. An outdoor seating area on the second floor provides a splendid view of Main Street. The Gin also has a 6,100 sq. ft. meeting venue for any business needs.
Otherwise, get out and explore Lexington, a wonderful small city in western Virginia. Wander the streets all day (or hop on a horse drawn carriage) until the old-fashioned lantern streetlamps kick on and spend some time in one of the towns great restaurants. Lexington adopted the name of its Massachusetts counterpart to honor the Revolutionary War. And while there is plenty of military history around the area, visitors should not miss the Natural Bridge and other outdoor wonders of Rockbridge County. And do not forget to visit the Virginia Safari Park!
