Step Afrika on Tour — Your Chance to Cherish America’s HBCU Culture
Traveling from city to city, and periodically updating its show, Step Afrika is your express ticket to feeling the vitality of HBCU (Historically Black College and University) culture.
"Vitality" is actually a gross understatement."High energy" doesn't capture the vibe either. This is an EXPLOSION on the dance floor. Step Afrika performances channel a volcanic energy that seems to infuse everyone in the audience with newfound chi on steroids.
It's beyond rhythm dancing. The athleticism of the Step Afrika troupe astounds!
You find yourself in a good natured rumble between the men and women as to who will outshine. You get to vote too. Later you become part of the call and response action, and a bit player in the rhythm section. In an evening's time you learn how the Stepping genre was born in HBCUs as a tradition that shelters students and fosters community. You learn too—just as the troupe did when it first visited Soweto back in the day— that its roots in African dance are there to see too.
