The Digital Nomads Village, Madeira

AO-Nomad-1

The Digital Nomads Village opened in February 2021 as the island looks to meet the demand for 'remote working'.

Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, is an archipelago of four islands off the northwest coast of Africa.

The main island of Madeira is volcanic, green and rugged, with high cliffs, pebbly beaches and settlements on deltas of the Fajã River.

Madeira is known for its namesake wine and warm, subtropical climate.

The Digital Nomads Village is located in Ponta do Sol on the south coast, with views out to the Atlantic and a short drive from the capital, Funchal.

It is an entire village dedicated to welcome a growing community of workers who no longer need to be located in their home country.

There are working spaces with access to a Slack community and internet.

The concept has launched in partnership with the Government of Madeira, StartUp Madeira and digital nomad Gonçalo Hall.

Hosting up to 100 nomads at any one time, residents must commit to at least a month.

On the same latitude as Casablanca, Madeira has lush landscapes and rich volcanic soil, mountainous terrain and expansive Laurissilva forest - a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 20% of the main island.

When working hours are over, nomads can explore the 3000km of levadas (ancient irrigation channels) which make walking tracks, swimming in natural lava pools, off-roading on near vertical tracks or spotting dolphins and whales, which swim close to the shore.

There is surfing, mountain biking, canyoning and trail running.

Funchal also has a growing scene for younger people with alfresco bars, independent boutiques and craft breweries

There is a range of restaurants from local establishments to fine-dining.
