Hilton lifts its profile in Cameroon
Hilton has announced an expansion of its hotel presence in Cameroon with the launch of its upmarket DoubleTree by Hilton brand in Douala, the country's largest city.
An opening date is still to be announced and will follow a multimillion-dollar renovation of the Douala Rabingha Hotel. The new property will join Hilton Yaoundé, which recently celebrated its thirtieth anniversary of operation in the capital.Cameroon is located in west-central Africa south of Nigeria, with its west coast fronting the Gulf of Guinea. Its nearly 25 million people speak 250 native languages between them, with French and English also widely spoken.
Cameroon is described by Lonely Planet as Africa's throbbing heart, "… a sultry mosaic of active volcanoes, white-sand beaches, thick rainforest and magnificent parched landscapes, the country is one that, in contrast to so many of its neighbours, enjoys a great deal of stability."
Hilton's managing director development, sub-Saharan Africa, Andrew McLachlan, said that Hilton had a strong tradition of hospitality in Cameroon, welcoming guests for over 30 years. "DoubleTree by Hilton Douala gives us a presence within the country's key commercial hub in an established location well known to international visitors to the city."
Located in Bonanjo, Douala's business district, the new 141-room hotel will be just six kilometres from the Douala International Airport and is near several businesses and administrative buildings including the French Consulate.
The property will feature five dining outlets, including a specialty restaurant, all-day dining restaurant, spectacular rooftop bar as well as lobby bar and café.
Meeting space will consist of four individual meeting rooms and a ballroom, whilst the hotel will also feature spa and fitness facilities as well as a children's playground.
DoubleTree by Hilton has over 18 properties trading or under development across the African continent – adding to a global portfolio of more than 600 hotels across 48 countries – including destinations such as Addis Ababa, Cape Town and Nairobi.
Tourism in Cameroon is still in its infancy but is growing. The government of Cameroon has cultivated the industry by creating a Ministry of Tourism and encouraging investment by airlines, hotels and travel agencies. The government describes the country as "Africa in miniature", promoting its diversity of climate, culture and geography as well as its wildlife, which includes many of Africa's iconic animals. Cameroon has seven national parks, the most famous of which is Waza located in the far north.
With its 400 km of coastline, Cameroon offers a variety of natural beaches together with picturesque bays, islets and mangroves. The seaside towns of Kribi in the south and Limbe in the southwest are equipped with hotel infrastructure capable of satisfying international visitors.
The cities of Yaoundé and Douala have international airports, convention centres and world-class hotels catering to business visitors.
