AllWays Traveller Features
Wilderness Safaris, Rwanda
Rwanda is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge, and one of smallest countries on the African mainland.
The country's borders have opened up to international travellers and Wilderness Safaris Rwanda has been able to welcome guests again to its Bisate Lodge and Magashi Camp.
Bisate Lodge has only six rooms and Magashi six airy tented suites, which makes them well suited for physical distancing, while transfers with a private guide and vehicle reduces contact still further.
The reopenings enable Wilderness Safaris continue conservation efforts in the area, as well as supporting local communities.
The company is very grateful for the assistance from past guests and partners who have helped provide several tons of essential supplies to Bisate.
These have helped hundreds of vulnerable families meet their basic food and hygiene needs.
Bisate is located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, with views of the peaks of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes through Afro-alpine forests.
Encountering one of the gorilla groups in the nearby Volcanoes National Park is a unique experience.
Bisate is within easy driving distance from where gorilla treks depart daily.
Walks on Bisate's property offer birding and participation in the reforestation programme.

Magashi Camp
Magashi Camp is situated in the diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga.
Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa, with open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains, and is home to one of Africa's highest hippo densities.
There are some large crocodiles as well as the rare sitatunga and more than 520 bird species.
Akagera now also boasts a healthy population of lion, which were reintroduced into the park in 2015 after a 20-year absence, as well as black rhino which were reintroduced in 2017.
Magashi, the only exclusive-use area in Akagera, also has a good density of leopard.
