Dominica to open the world’s longest cable car ride
The Discover Dominica Authority has announced several major developments, reinforcing the Nature Island's commitment to sustainable growth and enhanced visitor access.
Key among these is Dominica's groundbreaking cable car, the longest detachable cable car in the world at 6.6 kilometres, which will officially open in December.
The project will connect the Roseau Valley to the iconic Boiling Lake in just 20 minutes, transforming what is currently a six-hour hike into an accessible rainforest experience. It has already generated more than 450 construction jobs and will sustain more than 150 permanent positions.
The Boiling Lake is a flooded, bubbling fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage site situated a little over 10 kilometres east of Dominica's capital, Roseau, pictured below.
Progress to date
Significant progress has been made across key construction zones, including the tower sites, the bottom station and the top station.
Major structural installations have been carried out, with completed towers and pylons now firmly in place across various elevations. Engineers and crews are now preparing for the intricate process of cable pulling, an essential step before testing and commissioning. A new five-axle trailer arrived in Dominica from Belgium – the first time a trailer of this length and load capacity has been seen on the island – which is being used to transport the heavy cables required for the towers.
Consistent with Dominica's eco-tourism values, the project has been carefully designed to preserve the surrounding forest and natural beauty.
Location and reputation
The island of Dominica should not be confused with the Dominican Republic, which is a completely separate Caribbean nation. The predominantly English-speaking Dominica is part of the Windward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island.
Dominica is known as the nature island because of its lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes and rugged bays, and is a prime eco-tourism destination.
The Discover Dominica Authority said that the island continues to set itself apart in the Caribbean by investing in projects that expand access while preserving what makes the nature island so special. "We are redefining what it means to be a sustainable and green destination where nature is respected and where communities lead," it said.
More developments and more flights
Additional destination updates announced by the authority include:
- A 10-megawatt geothermal plant is set to become operational by the end of 2025, supplying up to 50 per cent of the country's peak electricity demand — dramatically lowering energy costs and carbon emissions.
- The US$201 million Cabrits Marina will welcome vessels up to 150 feet and feature a marine village with dining, shopping, and cultural experiences — all developed with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
Coinciding with these developments, American Airlines expanded its service from Miami in August with two to six flights per week, and this will increase to a daily service in October, marking a significant boost in flights from the US mainland to the island. This is one of the few direct services to Dominica, with UK residents having to fly via Antigua.
However, construction of Dominica's new international airport is ahead of schedule and is now expected to be completed by the end of this year. The 2,850-metre runway and climate-resilient terminal will support direct flights from North America and Europe, vastly expanding the island's visitor capacity. Dominica is also a popular cruise ship destination.
According to the authority, the upcoming cable car, expanded airlift and progress on renewable energy and infrastructure, means the island nation is not just building for today, but creating a more sustainable, connected and resilient future for generations to come.
