We walked in the footsteps of our Neolithic ancestors at Stonehenge – construction started in 3001BC - and were blown away.

This ring of standing stones, with each standing around 13 feet high, seven feet wide and weighing around 25 tons - is one of the wonders of the world.

It is no wonder then that over 1m visitors a year from all over the planet make their way to Salisbury Plain and marvel at the construction.

It is also one of the slickest tourist attractions it has been our pleasure to visit.

The best-known prehistoric monument in Europe is five-star.

You can explore the ancient landscape on foot or, in our case, as I have a leg problem, we boarded the shuttle bus for the five-minute ride to the stones.

Yes, you can see the mound from the main road, and it is amusing to watch cars slow down to a crawl to view the monument.

But that is nothing like being there and learning from the easy-to-operate and wonderfully informative audio guide which takes you smoothly around the hugely-impressive stone circle.

It presents astounding facts and figures about this unique attraction in a simple, non-jargon way.

And, don't forget to step inside the Neolithic Houses near the entry point to discover the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life.
